Airbnb has published a report with forecasts for the travel market for 2021. The company writes that in 2021 there will be a shift towards "important" travel - people will travel to their relatives and friends, meet them in a safe environment. But the industry will still be limited due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The attitude of tourists to travel

People have lost touch with family and the world. 53% of the respondents believe that they have moved away from their friends and family, 59% answered that they do not feel connected with the rest of the world.

How will this affect the sphere

Based on this data, Airbnb has predicted how travel will change in 2021 and possibly beyond.

Business travel will not return. People missed such travel least of all - only 6% of respondents. More than a third (36%) hope that they will travel less for work after the pandemic than before.

Distributed teams will come together to work together. Two in five Americans (41%) can work or study remotely, at least partially. Such people will change their homes more often. And companies will start organizing conventions to bring their remote traveling employees together.

People will be more likely to travel by car near their home. Now 56% prefer to travel within the country, 21% - abroad. Every fifth respondent wants the trip to be close to home. In 2020, the most popular rides on Airbnb were 50-500 miles, while in 2019, users traveled more than 3000 miles.

Travelers will prefer the isolation on the outskirts to bustling tourist centers. Every second (51%) answered that they would choose isolation outside of tourist areas. 24% of the respondents said that, on the contrary, they want to be “surrounded by people and energy”. On Airbnb, demand for small-town destinations has skyrocketed in 2020. For example, instead of Barcelona and London, people choose Derbyshire (UK), Forks (Washington State) and others.

Due to the remoteness, Airbnb users will be booking homes for a long time. 19% of those surveyed said that since the beginning of the pandemic, they have already rented housing for more than 28 days. Long-term bookings on Airbnb in Q3 2020 increased from 2019, despite restrictions.

The main priority in choosing a home is an affordable price. This was reported by 54% of tourists. Airbnb users said they use the service to save money.

It is important for tourists that people are vaccinated at their destination. This was the answer of 32% of respondents, another 30% want testing available there, and 29% need the availability of emergency care.

Users will choose green services. 56% of people under 50 said they would rather choose an online platform that offers alternative energy sources and sustainable housing.
