Fighting Plastic: Environmentalists vs Industry

Is it possible to reconcile industrial innovation, business and greenpeace activists? What do environmentalists think about innovation? What advanced technologies will help us cope with the threat of total pollution from plastic waste?

For many years I have been developing my Plastic Adios project to introduce new technologies and equipment for the chemical processing of mixed plastic waste. And I often see a shortage of quality articles on recycling plastic waste. Foreign media regularly publish materials that tell the details and features of the processing industry, problems, conflicts and features hidden for the layman.

I decided to translate one review, informative article from the Chemical and engineering news publication (link to the original article), which describes in detail the development of the chemical plastic recycling, which is in great demand in the waste recycling industry. The article is long, but if you are sincerely interested in learning a little more than emasculated articles in the Russian media about waste and recycling, then I invite you to familiarize yourself with the new material:

Companies are betting on the recycling of plastic waste. What are they counting on?

Chemical companies and major consumer brands are betting on chemical recycling (pyrolysis and depolymerization technologies) to help them achieve their plastic waste recycling goals. Over the next decade, companies plan to invest billions of dollars in new projects.

However, environmentalists are skeptical. They believe chemical recycling is a blindfold that will keep the business going; as a result, there will be no changes to improve the environment. They doubt that such projects will be implemented and say that the best option is to reduce plastic consumption. At the same time, the industrial sector claims that the effectiveness of the industrial application of the technology will soon be proven.

In 2022, Mondelēz International plans to launch the production of Philadelphia-branded cream cheese in new packaging, which will be made from chemically processed plastic waste. Packaging maker Berry Global will manufacture the packaging. Petrochemical company Sabic will supply polypropylene, and start-up Plastic Energy will produce raw materials for polypropylene made from plastic waste at a plant being built at the Sabic site in Gelin, the Netherlands.
